In the second quarter of 2022, the top 5 news and magazines apps in South Africa demonstrated varied performance across downloads, revenue, and active users. Here’s a closer look at the trends for each app based on Sensor Tower data.

News24: Trusted News. First saw a notable increase in weekly revenue, peaking at approximately $15.4K in the week of May 9. Weekly downloads fluctuated, reaching a high of 1.7K at the end of March and maintaining a steady rate around 1.4K towards the end of June. The app’s active users started at 182K and gradually declined to 157K by the end of the quarter.

Magzter: Magazines, Newspapers experienced a varied revenue stream, peaking at around $4K in the week of May 23. Download numbers remained relatively stable, with a maximum of 248 downloads in mid-April. Active users showed a slight decline from 2.1K at the beginning of the quarter to 1.8K by the end.
